Botox, Dysport, or Jeuveau: Which Is Right for Me?

Botox, Dysport, or Jeuveau: Which Is Right for Me?

After more than 20 years on the market, Botox® is a household name, and most everyone understands what it does. Yet, there are several new FDA-approved neuromodulators available.

In this post, we consider how two of them, Dysport® and Jeuveau®, differ from Botox and from each other.

Neil Spiegel, DO, and Jennifer Gularson, PA-C, along with our staff at the Osteopathic Center for Healing, work hard to help all of our patients enjoy optimal health, including feeling great about how they look.

When you’re happy with your appearance, you’re more confident in how you interact with the world, and that confidence can open all kinds of doors professionally, socially, and personally.

We offer skin care productsanti-aging and functional medicine, and injectables, among other cosmetic services in order to help our patients present their best faces as they live their lives.

Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau are similar products, and all work well to lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. But there are differences, and understanding those differences can help you decide which injectable is most likely to help you get the look you want.

The bacterium

All three substances come from the same bacterium, called Clostridium botulinum, which is, of course, the same bacterium that causes a type of food poisoning. But when it’s injected very precisely into a muscle in a carefully calculated amount, rather than making you sick, it interrupts nerve signals.

Clostridium botulinum produces eight different types of botulinum toxin, and those subtypes are the active ingredients in the various neuromodulator injectables.

Botox

Botox is onabotulinumtoxinA, and it’s the most well-known injectable. It was originally approved to treat vertical lines between the eyebrows, which are officially called glabellar lines, but often referred to as eleven lines.

In a short time, it was also approved to treat crow’s feet, and later moderate-to-severe forehead lines.

Botox is popular for several reasons. It’s safe, has been used by millions of people, and it doesn’t require much, if any, downtime. You may experience a little redness around the injection site, but it should resolve in less than one day, and sometimes in about 15 minutes.

Dysport

The big name for Dysport is abobotulinumtoxinA. It’s the second neuromodulator to receive FDA approval. It was first approved in 2009, so about seven years after Botox hit the market.

Dysport works a little bit faster than Botox, which usually takes a week or two to be fully apparent.

Many experts prefer Dysport to treat forehead wrinkles because it’s more spreadable than Botox. That is, it spreads out more under your skin in the targeted muscle, making it a good choice for treating a larger area, such as your forehead.

Jeuveau

PrabotulinumtoxinA, or more easily pronounced Jeuveau, was approved to treat lines between the eyebrows.

In one clinical trial, Jeuveau lasted longer for about 30% of participants, but researchers are not sure why. There’s also some evidence that Jeuveau may work better for men than other options.
