Cellular Therapies Q & A

What is cellular therapy?

Cellular therapy is a regenerative form of medicine that attempts to repair damage, disease, or injury to your body by leveraging your natural ability to heal.

These cells act as biological repairmen in your body. Under the right conditions, they have the ability generate new cells or become new cells with specialized functions. When these cells are used to treat medical conditions the goal is to trigger healing within your body by generating new cells to replace those that have been dysfunctional.

How does cellular therapy work?

These cells can act as your body’s raw building blocks. There are several sources for these cells used in this office including:

    • Perinatal cells, which are found in amniotic fluid or umbilical cord blood for example
    • Bone Marrow Aspiration – cells that are in the bone marrow including mesenchymal cells.

At Osteopathic Center for Healing, Dr. Spiegel typically uses adult cells located in tissues like bone marrow and or umbilical cells. This means that cells that are harvested from your bone marrow, for example, can create new cells in other tissues such as joints.

What conditions does cellular therapy treat?

Cellular therapies maybe helpful in treating a variety of dysfunction in your entire body, including your shoulders, elbows, and wrists or weight-bearing areas like your hips, knees, and ankles. Common issues that Dr. Spiegel treats using cellular therapy include:

      • Tennis elbow
      • Meniscal tears Partial tendon tears Glenoid or hip labral tears Achilles tendon and rotator cuff injuries

In addition to tendon tears and injuries, cellular therapy is also an effective treatment for osteoarthritis, a type of arthritis associated with aging and joint degeneration.

What can I expect during my appointment?

During your appointment, Dr. Spiegel extracts healthy adult cells from your body and then introduces them to the site of your pain. This precise procedure is guided by ultrasound technology to ensure your healthy cells are delivered to the area that has damaged cells. With the healthy, new cells at the site of your injury, your damaged cells begin to regenerate. This regeneration restores the function of the muscle, joint, or tendon while also relieving your pain. Initial results typically are noticeable three weeks after your treatment with continued improvement over six months.
